Neurological Occupational Therapy

Getting back to the activities that matter most - on the Hibiscus Coast and surrounding areas - Including Home Visits

When a neurological condition affects the way you think, manage your energy, or get through your day, it doesn’t just show up in one place - it can affect everything.

Simple things can become unexpectedly difficult.

You might feel more fatigued than usual.

Tasks that once felt automatic can take effort, planning, or support.

Neurological occupational therapy focuses on the practical side of recovery, helping you rebuild confidence and independence in the everyday activities that matter most to you.

At Hibiscus Neuro Rehab, we take the time to understand how your condition is affecting your day-to-day life and work with you to find a way forward, at your pace, around your goals.

Occupational Therapy Focused on Everyday Life

Neurological conditions including  Concussion, SCI stroke,Parkinson’s, multiple sclerosis, and others, can affect much more than movement.

Many people notice changes in:

  • Energy levels

  • Concentration and memory

  • Organisation and planning

  • The ability to manage everyday tasks

These changes can be hard to explain - especially when things look okay from the outside.

Neurological occupational therapy is different from general OT because it focuses specifically on these functional changes.

Rather than working from a standard programme, we focus on helping you:

  • Do more of what matters to you

  • Use your energy more effectively

  • Feel more confident in day-to-day life

Areas We Focus On

Fatigue Management - Neurological fatigue is different from ordinary tiredness.

It can come on suddenly, limit what you’re able to do, and take longer to recover from.

Many people find that understanding their fatigue patterns is the first step.

We may support you with:

  • Pacing and energy planning

  • Sleep management and support

  • Prioritising what matters most

  • Structuring your day to reduce energy crashes

  • Cognitive Rehabilitation - Changes in thinking can show up in subtle - but frustrating ways.

    You might notice:

    • Memory lapses

    • Difficulty concentrating

    • Slower processing

    • Word-finding challenges

We work on practical, real-world strategies to help you:

    • Stay organised

    • Manage daily tasks

    • Feel more in control of your day

  • Returning to Meaningful Activities - Recovery isn’t just about function, it’s about getting back to the things that give your day purpose.

    That might include:

    • Cooking or managing your home

    • Getting back to hobbies

    • Reconnecting socially

    • Returning to roles that matter to you

Your programme is built around what you want to get back to - not a template.

Your Questions Answered

Do I need a referral to book an appointment?

No. You're welcome to contact us directly to book an initial consultation — no GP or ACC referral needed.

Do you provide home visits?

Yes. Home visits are available across the Hibiscus Coast and surrounding areas. We also see people who travel from Warkworth, Wellsford, Mangawhai and wider Northland to access dedicated neurological and vestibular rehabilitation.

What happens at the first appointment?

Your first session is about understanding you - what’s been going on, how it’s affecting your day, and what matters most right now.

We’ll complete an assessment and talk through what support may look like for you.

What is neurological occupational therapy?

It focuses on how a neurological condition impacts your thinking, energy, and ability to carry out everyday tasks.

It often works alongside neurological physiotherapy as part of the multidisciplinary team.

Can OT help with progressive neurological conditions?

Yes. OT can help maintain independence, manage fatigue, and support quality of life — even when a condition is ongoing or progressive. We work with where you are now and focus on what will make the most difference.
